At the time of the second world war the quality of Japanese products was known to be sub-standard. After the war, Japan decided to change the image of the quality of their products. They invited quality management experts like Dr. W. E. Deming and Dr. J. M. Juran from USA to assist them in this effort. Till such time “quality” was regarded as a “technical function” in all parts of the world. Dr. Deming & Dr. Juran taught the Japanese industrialists that unless they see “quality” as a “management function” they cannot improve the consistency in the quality of their products and services. We all know of Japan’s success in world markets after 1970. Largely, their success was due to the wide-spread implementation of the quality management concepts of Dr. Deming & Dr. Juran. So much so that Japanese products became a threat for American organizations on their own soil.
